The Lakeland Campus is completing a transition from an instructional location, at which almost all instruction was provided by instructors from other campuses, to a free-standing campus with resident faculty. During this transition, we have engaged in full participation in outcomes assessment processes, in full cooperation with the home discipline departments of the University. As a campus with a rapidly growing and changing student body, we face some complications with assessment that other campuses do not have, including courses with small enrollments, cohort programs that do not repeat courses each year, and programs of study which have only recently begun to be offered. Nonetheless, we believe that it is important for the campus to be fully integrated into University-wide processes and for the campus to grow with a strong continuous quality improvement culture.

We have identified expected outcomes for our educational programs, during both the 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 academic years. Faculty from each program area developed measures and administered assessments each year. Each program area then assessed whether goals were met and seriously considered what steps should be taken if findings did not meet expectations. Following the Nichols model of outcomes assessment, we have developed assessment plans, which include departmental goals, measurements, and criteria for success, and assessment reports, which include findings and plans for use of those results.
